Warning to Britons over Thai unrest

April 13, 2009 by hal73

The UK Foreign Office has warned against travel to Bangkok and Thailand as the Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva declared a state of emergency.
Within hours, Thai soldiers were spraying automatic weapons fire into the air and using tear gas to clear anti-government protesters who were blocking major road junctions in the capital Bangkok.
In the pre-dawn darkness at least one petrol bomb was thrown in reply and 70 people were reported injured, most by tear gas.
The confrontation was the first serious clash between the demonstrators and security forces since protests surged last week.
Police said protesters were stationed at half a dozen spots in the city, including the PM's office. They had commandeered public buses to block several key road junctions and had set tyres on fire.
On Sunday, a mob of protesters had smashed cars carrying PM Abhisit Vejjajiva and his aides. The secretary-general of Mr Abhisit's office, Niphon Promphan, was dragged from the car and beaten, suffering head injuries and broken ribs.
The protesters are supporters of ousted former PM Thaksin Shinawatra who want new elections, claiming Mr Abhisit's four-month-old government took power illegitimately.
They also accuse the country's elite -- the military, judiciary and other unelected officials -- of undermining democracy by interfering in politics.
TV footage showed injured people being taken away as soldiers in full combat gear secured the area at the Din Daeng motorway junction to the north of the city.
On Friday, the protesters had forced the cancellation of a 16-nation Asian summit being hosted in Thailand. In an embarrassment for the government, hundreds of demonstrators stormed the summit venue and the leaders had to be evacuated by helicopter

Pattaya Police Chief reassigned for 30 days following Red Shirt attack on Prime Ministers Car in South Pattaya.

April 13, 2009 by hal73

Tuesday was a day that Pattaya Police would like to forget after the City became a sea of red following a Cabinet Meeting at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort. The Prime Minister, who was in attendance, left Pattaya on Tuesday Afternoon and used an unmarked regular car in an attempt to avoid the red shirted anti-government protesters, however they were not fooled and close to the junction of Pattaya Third Road with the South Pattaya Road, the car carrying the Prime Minister collided with a motorbike, forcing it to stop. The car was then attacked and the rear window of the Silver Nissan Pardo was smashed. Eventually the Prime Minister managed to escape and it was left to Pattaya Police to pick-up the pieces and search for the persons responsible for the attack. They determined that the bike involved in the crash was owned by Khun Wanchalerm aged 22 and video evidence and witness statements suggested he intentionally placed the bike in the path of the car carrying the Prime Minister. He made his way to Pattaya Police Station where he registered himself as the owner of the bike and he also signed papers relating to the incident without accepting responsibility for the attack on the Prime Ministers car. However the red shirts were angry and sent around 800 supporters to the station to demand his immediate release claiming he was a scapegoat and arrested only because of pressure on the Police from the Prime Ministers Officer who demanded an arrest within 48 hours of the incident. Dramatic scenes at the Police Station saw the red shirts storm the second floor where the suspect was being held in the cells. Police decided to release the man on Police Bail to avoid a riot at the Police Station. The case will now go to court. We can confirm that Police Colonel Sarayut, the Chief of Pattaya Police has been reassigned for a period of 30 days because of the incident and the temporary Chief of Pattaya Police will be Police Colonel Tirapong, who is currently the Deputy Commander of Chonburi Provincial Police. Further action against Senior Police Officers is expected to take place in the coming days.

Khun Malai aged 35, a cleaner from the Outlet Mall discovered a plastic bag within the normal refuse from the Mall and noticed a foul odor. Inside the bag she spotted the body of a newly born baby girl wrapped in a cotton blanket. Tests indicated the baby had been dead for at least 2 days. CCTV is now being checked to determine who dumped the body at the location and a post mortem examination is now underway to determine if the child died naturally or was killed. The Police Investigation is ongoing at this time.

April 8, 2009 by hal73

Responding to complaints, a team of Pattaya Police Officers led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Chalermsuk conducted a raid on Tony’s Discotheque located on Walking Street. The complainants suggested the venue was open after its permitted licensed operating hours. At around 4am on Tuesday, the raid took place and the venue was found to be open. Officers decided to randomly urine test patrons and employees and 5 females and 1 man failed the test and were arrested on a charge of consuming a class 1 drug.
